The top crack appears to be only in the finish and is stable. This one is priced to sell in light of the various cosmetic dings and scratches shown in the pictures, as well as the finish crack on top, and the electronics issue described above. The original Carvin neck pickup is included, as will be the additional (non-functional) Little Thunder - sell the additional pickups or have them repaired!
CARVIN GUITARS DEMO SERIES
Currently Carvin sells guitar and bass building kits, Fender-style electric guitars like the Bolt and AE185, basses ranging from the LB series to the double-neck LB76, and high-gain amps like. Also, the stereo output jack likely needs new screws Carvin Guitars and Amps Carvin gained notoriety in the 1970s when it began offering made-to-order guitars and selling direct to the public via mail order. If I were to keep this guitar I would replace the neck pickup, however, it does function as a normal pickup as-is (the wiring was done such the the neck pickup bypasses the tone control).
I had a "A Little Thunder" pickup installed to make use of the stereo guitar jacks this guitar came with - while the pickup functions properly when the bass signal from the Little Thunder is switched off, the pickup is very noisy when the bass signal is switched on, and is likely defective (this is actually the second one I received from A Little Thunder, the first one was non-functional). Nice low action over a smooth, beautiful ebony board with large frets. I bought it from a Carvin/Kiesel employee who had it set up to Carvin specs and checked out by a Carvin tech. This one plays beautifully and sounds amazing. The bodies appear to be the same bodies used for the Hofner T4, which sell for upwards of $2000. The materials and workmanship on these models were unusually good - google them and you will see they have universally highly positive reviews from owners, they are much nicer than any semi hollow you will find in this price range. If you're not familiar with these, the bodies were manufactured by Hofner in the 80's using violin-grade materials and then shipped to Carvin for finishing. Very cool and rare Carvin SH225 semihollow in stealthy jet black.
